Bangladesh began their 2019 World Cup campaign strongly with a win against South Africa but eventually lost their path dramatically and crashed out of the opening round ranked eighth on the points table.
Senior players such as captain Mashraf Mortaza and veteran opener Tamim Iqbal failed to fire for the Bangladesh side as star performer Shakib Al Hasan often played the role of a lone warrior to put up a tremendous fight against oppositions.
Looking back at the missed opportunities in the World Cup, Tamim and Mashrafe reflected on their shortcomings in an Instagram Live session. The two cricketers admitted they were below par in the field and could not help Bangladesh achieve greater heights.
"When Shakib wanted to bat at number three [in the World Cup], I backed him fully because I knew he could make full impact from that position. Ultimately, as a team could not utilise his impact,” Mashrafe said.
“If you and I could have played 25 percent better, I think we would have been in the semis," Tamim told Mashrafe in response.
