Tennis star and the wife of Shoaib Malik, Sania Mirza opens about the criticism faced by the wives of the cricket players. She feels that the women are unwantedly targeted for the poor performances of their male counterparts. She related the scenarios with the story of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli- where the Bollywood actress was constantly criticized for Virat’s off-color performance whenever she visited the grounds.
"We are saying it as a joke but I think there is a much deeper issue. The deeper issue is that a woman can always be a distraction and not a strength. Oh 'if you're girlfriend is there or your wife is there, he must be distracted because he is going out for dinner'. That doesn't even make any sense.", Sania quoted.
She related the scenario with Mitchell Starc and Alyssa Healy when Starc missed out on an ODI game to go and watch his wife play in the Women’s T20 World Cup final. Sania said if the same thing had been done by Shoaib Malik and Virat Kohli, the people would have slammed them badly. She called for this poor mentality to change.
