Former Pakistani spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has chalked out the reasons behind the underperformance of Ravi Ashwin, Nathan Lyon and Yasir Shah in the ODI cricket. The veteran spinner feel that these players lack the adequate variations to dominate in the limited-overs cricket. Where these spinners have been immensely successful in Test cricket, their limited-overs stint has been worrisome.
"Look at Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. They have won so many (white ball) games for India in the last two years. Maybe the likes of Lyon, Ashwin, and Yasir don't have enough variations to survive in one-day cricket," Mushtaq said.
While differentiating Test match spinners from limited over spinners, he said, "Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge for the spinners as you get to know their true skills. The likes of Yasir Shah, Nathan Lyon, Moeen Ali, Ashwin. These are the guys I admire. Their contribution to Test cricket has been huge”.
Ashwin has not played any limited-overs cricket for India since 2017, Nathan Lyon has been a very rare option for Australia in the ODI and T20I cricket, whereas Yasir Shah has also failed to create his mark in the shorter formats of the game for Pakistan.
