Legendary swing bowler Wasim Akram has not shied away from criticizing T20 cricket for its drastic impacts on the standards of bowling in world cricket. Akram made a damning indictment on the shortest format during an Instagram Live session with former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra.
Not holding back his strong sentiments on the topic, Akram felt T20 cricket did not hone a bowler’s skills and instead introduced a mindset of containing runs through the use of variations rather than pick up wickets. He believed T20 cricket diverted the attention away from first-class cricket, which is considered to be a real test of a player’s abilities.
“T20 cricket does not make bowlers. Back when we used to play, it was six months playing for the national team and another six months for the county team. Youngsters need to play more first-class cricket to learn bowling,” Akram opined.
