After more than 3 years, India was finally dethroned in Test cricket as Australia claimed the top position in the latest red-ball rankings earlier this month. In this calculation, the points gathered in the 2016-17 season were removed which aided the yellow team to push India to the third position on the rankings.
Reviewing it, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was frustrated to see Australia gaining the top position in the purest format of the game. However, the cricketer turned politician added that rankings don’t matter for him and India had been the most competitive side in Tests from the last few years. He also questioned the points system which bestows the same number of points for home and away wins.
“For me, India should be there (on No. 1) because I have serious doubts about how Australia got to the top rankings in this format. They have been absolutely pathetic away from home, particularly in the sub-continent”- the veteran of 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is said while sharing his opinion on the matter.
