ICC boards meeting is expected to take place on 28th May 2020 to decide the fate of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020. Amidst the pandemic, it is expected that ICC might shift the tournament to 2022, in case the situation does not become feasible for cricket. However, shifting the tournament to 2022 is not the only option on the table, closed-door tournament, and 14-day quarantine period before and after the tournament are the other two possibilities.
"We are expecting three options from the ICC Events Committee. The first option is having World T20 as per schedule with 14-day quarantine with crowd being allowed. The back-up for this option could be tournament in-front of an empty stadium. The third option could be shifting the tournament to 2022" - an official said.
Considering the losses faced by Cricket Australia, ICC might decide to play the tournament on the schedule. Moreover, the ICC’s financial setbacks will also be considered in making this decision.
"CA wouldn’t be too unhappy if the World T20 is shifted to 2022. At the end of the day, ICC is made up of members. If members decide that bilateral series are more important, you can’t discount that" - the ICC board member said.
Furthermore, ICC is also expected to discuss the issue of a possible ban of saliva and sweat to shine the ball in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period.
